Before Lacey Elementary opened, Watson was one of the district’s larger elementary schools. The community deserves transparency about how the district expected Lacey’s opening and its attendance boundaries to affect Watson. 1. When the district established Lacey Elementary’s attendance zone, what enrollment impact did it project for Watson Elementary? 2. Watson has reportedly lost more than 100 students since Lacey opened. Did the district anticipate a decline of this magnitude? 3. How many students were reassigned from Watson to Lacey—or to another school—because of attendance-zone changes? 4. How much of Watson’s enrollment decline resulted from district decisions regarding school boundaries, rather than families independently choosing to leave Watson? 5. If the district’s own boundary decisions contributed substantially to Watson’s enrollment decline, how is it fair to use that decline as a justification for closing the school? Watson should not be penalized for an enrollment decline created or accelerated by district decisions. Before any closure recommendation moves forward, the district must release the enrollment projections, attendance-zone maps, student reassignment data, and impact analyses used when Lacey Elementary was opened. Our families deserve the full story. Keep Watson Elementary open and invest in the students, programs, educators, and multilingual families who make this school an essential part of our community. Watson is a community school and the first dual language school in the district. 

Public schools are a cornerstone of our democracy. When decisions are made by politicians and technocrats rather than by communities, education ceases to serve the public good and erodes public trust. Recent communication from the Delaware Department of Education on social media indicates that it is heading down the same road as in the past, trying to manage and fix education without engaging in  meaningful, substantive conversations with educators, students, parents and community members. We cannot afford to waste more time on efficiency, management and deficit ideology. That top-down management-driven approach did not produce the transformation that Delaware was promised during the Race to the Top Initiative of the past sixteen years, and it will not work now. Instead, we need the DDOE to make a strong commitment to democratic processes, shared decision-making and relationship building.  Please read and sign this petition from Public School Strong Delaware. 

Disability rights are civil rights. Students with disabilities should not have to wait another generation for Congress to fulfill a promise that was made decades ago. Fully funding IDEA would improve outcomes for students with disabilities, strengthen public schools for all students, and honor the federal commitment made to millions of children and families.

As our elected officials, you have the opportunity to take a critcal leadership role in making sure Initiative 195 qualifies for the ballot and passes in November. The undersigned community members ask you to endorse Initiative 195 as soon as possible to send a message to the Greeley/Evans and Colorado community: a more fair tax system and fully funded public schools that meet the needs of every student are within Colorado's reach.  We just need the courage to choose that path.

It is more important than ever to call on the federal government to fulfill promises made long ago to fully fund Title I and IDEA. It is equally important to call on our state legislators to provide adequate and equitable state funding. By having Senators, Members of Congress, and school boards across the country pass resolutions supporting these efforts, we can galvanize this moment to shed light on the critical funding needs in our public schools. This is taxation without representation. The superintendent and board are attempting to take a critical step for the district without consulting and informing stakeholders. 

The goal for leaders is to totally defund and dismantle public education.in full.  This can not happen. Authoritarians must be stopped. Billionaires must be stopped.
