Protect Virginia Schools
Protect Virginia Schools -Sign the Petition
As President Trump prepares to release his next federal budget, Virginia's congressional delegation needs to hear directly from us.
Federal funding plays a critical role in supporting schools across Virginia -especially in rural and under-resourced communities. These funds help provide:
- Special education services for students with diverse needs
- Academic support and tutoring for struggling learners
- Career and technical education programs that prepare students for real jobs
- Resources for schools serving low-income families
The Trump administration has threatened to cut 145 million from Virginia Schools. If federal funding is reduced, our schools may be forced to make tough decisions:
- Cutting teachers and staff
- Eliminating essential student programs
- Increasing the burden on already stretched local taxpayers
By signing this petition, you are sending a clear message to Virginia's leaders in Washington:
Protect federal funding for public education and invest in the future of our students.
Every signature shows that Virginians believe in strong public schools- and expect our elected officials to stand up for our children, our educators, and our communities.
To: Virginia Congressional Delegation
From: Concerned constituents of Virginia
We, the undersigned, call on Virginia's congressional delegation to oppose any federal budget proposals that would reduce funding for public education for Virginia's children. Last year's House budget proposed to cut over $12 billion in public education funding nationally, and we are concerned that we will face a similar threat this year.
Public schools educate around 1.4 million of Virginia's children. Programs funded through federal investments include school meals, Title 1 for low-income students, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), programs for rural schools, career and technical education programs, and support for English learners.
Federal funds are especially important for students with disabilities, and IDEA is currently underfunded.
Cuts to federal education funding would mean fewer resources for classrooms. reduced support for at-risk students, and increased financial pressure on local communities that already rely heavily on property taxes to fund schools.
At a time when many school districts are already facing budget uncertainty, federal funding must be protected. Our students need more opportunities, more resources, and greater protections, not less.
We urge Virginia's Senators and Members of Congress to:
- Oppose any cuts to federal education funding.
- Protect and expand funding for programs that support students with disabilities, rural students, low-income students, and English learners.
- Ensure stable and adequate long-term federal investment in public education.
Virginia's students, families, and communities depend on strong public schools. Congress must act to protect the resources our schools rely on.
Why is this important?
It is more important than ever to call on the federal government to fulfill promises made long ago to fully fund Title I and IDEA. It is equally important to call on our state legislators to provide adequate and equitable state funding. By having Senators, Members of Congress, and school boards across the country pass resolutions supporting these efforts, we can galvanize this moment to shed light on the critical funding needs in our public schools.
