To: Jeffco Public Schools Board of Education
Let's Fund Our Jeffco Public Schools AND Make Our Tax System More Fair!
The undersigned respectfully urge the Jeffco Public Schools Board to pass a resolution endorsing these two measures.
Why is this important?
As you well know, Colorado does not fund its public schools adequately. In fact, Jeffco Public Schools has faced tough budgets year after year -- as during the 2025-2026 school year every school was affected by Jeffco Public Schools $60 million in budget reductions. Without a major change in Colorado's fiscal situation, it will be even worse next year. We support and appreciate your efforts in working with JESPA/JCEA on an MLO for this fall's ballot.
But in the midst of this urgency there is great opportunity. If Colorado voters pass two ballot measures – Cut the Ropes (SB26-135, now Proposition NN) and Protect Colorado's Future (Initiative 195) – today's elementary students could actually graduate from fully funded high schools.
"Cut the Ropes" will raise the current state spending limit, allowing our state to use the money it already collects for K-12 schools without raising taxes for anyone.
Protect Colorado's Future will increase funding for public schools by at least $700 million annually, including $62 million for Jeffco, by creating a graduated income tax that lowers taxes for 98.6% of Jefferson County taxpayers.
As our elected officials, you have the opportunity to take a critical leadership role in making sure these measures are both on the ballot and that they will both pass.
We ask you to endorse both measures as soon as possible to send a message to the Jeffco and Colorado community: fully funded public schools that meet the needs of every student are within Colorado's reach, even giving tax cuts to over 97% of Colorado taxpayers. We just need the courage to choose that path.
