To: Gov. Jared Polis and the next Governor of Colorado

Tell the Governor: NO Vouchers in Colorado

On October 1, the US Dept of Treasury released regulations for implementing Trump’s new federal school voucher program. These regulations make clear that this costly program will benefit mostly wealthy families, fuel discrimination and fraud, and provide no direct funding to public schools. They confirm what many of us feared: this program is designed to move public dollars into private and religious schools, with almost no strings attached.

That's why we, the undersigned, pledge to fight to ensure the federal voucher program stays out of Colorado.

Colorado voters have protected our students, public schools and state budget from vouchers over and over again, most recently in 2024 when millions of us  rejected Amendment 80. Opting Colorado into the Trump voucher program created by the "One Big Beautiful Bill Act" is a slap in the face to Colorado voters and an invitation to fraud, waste, discrimination, and erosion of public school funding.

To Governor Polis: We implore you to heed the will of the voters and leave the decision of whether to participate in the Trump voucher program to the next governor.

And we call upon the next governor to opt Colorado out before the February 15 deadline.

To gubernatorial candidate AG Phil Weiser: Thank you for your strong and principled stand against vouchers in general and the Trump voucher scheme in particular.  We hope that, should you be elected, you will have the opportunity to opt Colorado out of this scheme for 2027.  If Governor Polis makes that impossible, we ask that you immediately announce your intent to opt Colorado out of the program for 2028 and work along side us toward congressional repeal of this dangerous policy.

To gubernatorial candidates Victor Marx and Greg Lopez: We hope that, should you be elected, you will have the opportunity to opt Colorado out of this scheme for 2027.  If Governor Polis makes that impossible, we ask that you immediately announce your intent to opt Colorado out of the program for 2028 and work along side us toward congressional repeal of this dangerous policy.

The Trump voucher plan is a costly mistake that will result in massive fraud (like that documented in Arizona as a result of their state voucher program), balloon the federal deficit, and shovel public dollars into private schools that may turn away or push out students because of a disability, academic challenges, LGBTQ status, or religion. Remarkably, the rules expressly forbid states from adding their own protections against fraud and discrimination.

If we opt in, we give up our ability to protect our own children.
