'1619' Summer Incubator: An Ask and Apply Workshop
The Pulitzer Center invites educators interested in teaching hard histories and engaging students with themes of democracy to join us on Saturday, June 7, 2025, from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. EDT for the 1619 Summer Incubator Ask and Apply Workshop. This event, hosted as part of the Zinn Education Project’s Teach Truth Day of Action, will be an opportunity for teachers to learn more about the Pulitzer Center’s 1619 Education Materials Collection and begin developing strong applications for our 1619 Summer Incubator. The event is free, but registration is required.
The 1619 Summer Incubator builds on nearly six years of work connecting students and educators to The 1619 Project and to one another. The program is calling for project proposals from education professionals that will use resources from The 1619 Project to:
- Impact at least 500 students and/or educators in their local communities.
- Improve the awareness and critical thinking of students and/or educators about the legacies of slavery in the contemporary United States, and the contributions of Black Americans to American democracy.
- Explore the role the news media plays in shaping our understanding of both history and democracy.
- Equip students and/or educators to take action and make change that advances democracy within their communities.
Participation in the 1619 Summer Incubator is exclusive to education professionals in our extended Pulitzer Center education community, which includes Network/Fellowship alumni, prior event attendees, and newsletter subscribers. If you are new to the Pulitzer Center, attending this event and/or subscribing to our 1619 Education Newsletter will help you meet this requirement.
In this 60-minute workshop for educators, we’ll share the resources and strategies participants in previous 1619 Education programs have used to explore the central theme of democracy with their students and review the goals and application process for the 1619 Summer Incubator. Participants will have the opportunity to brainstorm around how project materials can support their education communities and ask any questions they have about how to draft a successful proposal for the 1619 Summer Incubator.
Join members of the Pulitzer Center’s U.S. Education and Outreach team and educators from around the country who pledge to #TeachTruth for an hour of critical conversation, resource sharing, and action.
